Built for Belonging

The Importance of Mentorship

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”Hebrews 10:24-25

From the beginning, we were never made to live day to day alone. Scripture tells us in Genesis 2:18, “Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone…” We can see the importance of discipleship and intentional investment in the lives of others all throughout Scripture. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us of the importance of the church gathering together: showing up for one another, encouraging each other and growing together in faith in Christ. One way we intentionally pursue discipleship is through Mentor Groups.

Mentor Groups are one-on-one discipleship relationships centered on God’s Word. They are designed to help believers grow through intentional prayer, Bible study and accountability, challenging one another both personally and spiritually. Mentor Groups require committing your time to invest, or be invested in, by one specific person.

Spiritual accountability isn’t about checking off a box. It’s about intentionally growing and maturing in your personal walk with the Lord alongside a brother or sister in Christ. When we’re actively maturing in our faith, we’re walking in pursuit of God’s purpose for our lives. Through mentorship, we pursue Christ and learn how to stand firm against the enemy. As the body of Christ, we’re called to glorify and make much of Jesus. Mentorship is one way we do that through intentional, one-on-one relationships. So ask yourself: is there someone who truly knows you and is helping you become more like Christ?

Three Reasons Why We should be Known

Being known is at the heart of Hebrews 10:24-25. It is not just about showing up; it is about showing up honestly. When you open your life to others, you create space for real connection. That is where mentorship takes root. In that kind of space, others can walk with you through hard things, pray with you when you are struggling, and celebrate with you when God moves in powerful ways.

1. We are to Stir One Another Up

Verse 24 begins with a call to action: “Stir up one another to love and good works.” The phrase “stir up” points to the kind of active, intentional involvement that’s essential in mentorship. Mentors ask the hard questions you might be avoiding. Mentors challenge you to grow, encourage you to bear fruit, and push you to become more like Christ each day.

2. We are Not Meant to Do Life Alone

The start of verse 25 tells us, “not neglecting to meet together.” In other words, we do not neglect meeting together because we know the eternal impact of advancing the kingdom. We were created for connection. God calls us into relationship with Him and with one another. Doing life together helps us truly be known. Mentors know how to pray for you intentionally and encourage you personally, emotionally and in your relationship with the Lord. Scripture says in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

3. We Need Daily Encouragement and Accountability

Hebrews 10:25 ends by saying, “encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” As we face challenges in life, we all need encouragement from fellow believers who will lift us up and push us to “run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1). The vulnerability you share with a mentor helps them recognize when you are struggling. Accountability comes from a place of love, not judgment, because a mentor wants you to pursue the Lord in the seen and unseen of your life.

Mentors are here to walk alongside you while running the race of life. They create a sense of belonging. They make us known. Mentors are here to encourage, hold us accountable, and disciple us so that we can mature our relationships with the Lord. Our Mentor Groups are constantly beginning, and we would love to start the process of connecting you with a mentor or taking the next step to lead a Mentor Group.
